What to look out for while in Uganda

The Big Five

A trip to Africa is not complete without experiencing a wildlife safari. Safaris allow you to get up close to the wild animals where they live and feed. You will be going on the search for the illusive ‘Big Five’ game: the African lion, leopard, rhino, elephant and the Cape buffalo. These can be viewed in all the parks of Uganda.

The term was originally used by game hunters because it was difficult to hunt such game on foot. There are only thirteen countries world-wide and all in Africa where all Big Five can be seen, Uganda being one of the favorite spots.

The Herbivores

There currently ten National Parks in Uganda which include Queen Elizabeth, Lake Mburo, Murchison Falls, Kidepo Valley, Kibale, Mount Elgon, Rwenzori Mountains, Semuliki, Mgahinga Gorilla and Bwindi Impenetrable National Parks and up to 12 Wildlife reserves.

These are covered with open grassland that have proved to be a great sanctuary for the different herbivorous animals as Rothschild’s giraffe, hippopotamus, Burchell’s zebra, Klipspringer, duiker family (Forest duiker, Harvey’s red duiker, Peter’s duiker, Grey duiker)
Antelope family like (the Eland, Greater Kudu, Hartebeest, Oryx, Defassa waterbuck, Uganda kob, Reedbuck, Grant’s gazelle, lesser kudu, Impala).

The Primates in Uganda

Uganda is graced with a unique and comforting climate all year round which provides a safe haven for the survival of the primates with at least 20 species primates species calling Uganda home.

These include Mountain gorilla, White-thighed colobus, Chimpanzee, Western guereza, Adolf Friedrichs' Angola colobus, Ashy red colobus, Oustalet's red colobus, Dent’s monkey, Golden monkey, Doggett’s blue monkey, l'Hoest's monkey, Schmidt's red-tailed monkey, Olive baboon, Thomas' dwarf galago, Spectacled lesser galago

1090 Confirmed Species in Uganda

Uganda is a birding paradise as it is home to 1090 confirmed bird species, which is close to 60% of all bird species in Africa making it a dream destination for bird lovers.

Uganda’s remarkable diversity of bird species can be attributed to it's climate receiving rain all year round. Bird species include but not limited to: Archer's robin-chat, Black-lored babbler, Blue-headed sunbird, Chapin's flycatcher, Dusky crimsonwing, Dwarf honeyguide, Golden-winged sunbird, Grant's bluebill.

This includes species like the Fox's weaver, Ruwenzori double-collared sunbird that are endemic that is they only live in Uganda.
