Bwindi Impenetrable Forest

Choosing the right sector for your gorilla trek

Bwindi is divided into four trekking sectors, each with its own gorilla families, terrain, and character. Your sector choice affects your experience significantly — here's how to decide.

Key fact: Bwindi is home to roughly half the world's mountain gorillas — about 459 individuals across 20+ habituated families.

The Four Sectors

Buhoma (North)

The original trekking sector and most developed. Best infrastructure, easiest access, and generally moderate treks.

  • Gorilla families: Mubare, Habinyanja, Rushegura
  • Trek difficulty: Moderate
  • Best for: First-time trekkers, those wanting comfort
  • Lodges: Most options, from budget to luxury

Rushaga (South)

The largest sector with the most gorilla families. More permit availability but longer drives from Kampala.

  • Gorilla families: Nshongi, Mishaya, Kahungye, Busingye, Bweza, Mucunguzi
  • Trek difficulty: Moderate to challenging
  • Best for: Permit availability, larger families
  • Bonus: Gorilla habituation experience available here

Ruhija (East)

Highest altitude sector with bamboo forests. Cooler temperatures and unique birding opportunities.

  • Gorilla families: Oruzogo, Bitukura, Kyaguliro
  • Trek difficulty: Challenging (high altitude)
  • Best for: Birders, those seeking fewer tourists
  • Special: Bamboo walks, high-altitude endemics

Nkuringo (South)

Most physically demanding sector with steep terrain. Rewards you with dramatic views and fewer crowds.

  • Gorilla families: Nkuringo, Bushaho, Christmas
  • Trek difficulty: Challenging to very challenging
  • Best for: Fit trekkers, photographers (great light)
  • Note: Some treks descend 600m+ into valleys
