Bwindi is divided into four trekking sectors, each with its own gorilla families, terrain, and character. Your sector choice affects your experience significantly — here's how to decide.
Key fact: Bwindi is home to roughly half the world's mountain gorillas — about 459 individuals across 20+ habituated families.
The Four Sectors
Buhoma (North)
The original trekking sector and most developed. Best infrastructure, easiest access, and generally moderate treks.
- Gorilla families: Mubare, Habinyanja, Rushegura
- Trek difficulty: Moderate
- Best for: First-time trekkers, those wanting comfort
- Lodges: Most options, from budget to luxury
Rushaga (South)
The largest sector with the most gorilla families. More permit availability but longer drives from Kampala.
- Gorilla families: Nshongi, Mishaya, Kahungye, Busingye, Bweza, Mucunguzi
- Trek difficulty: Moderate to challenging
- Best for: Permit availability, larger families
- Bonus: Gorilla habituation experience available here
Ruhija (East)
Highest altitude sector with bamboo forests. Cooler temperatures and unique birding opportunities.
- Gorilla families: Oruzogo, Bitukura, Kyaguliro
- Trek difficulty: Challenging (high altitude)
- Best for: Birders, those seeking fewer tourists
- Special: Bamboo walks, high-altitude endemics
Nkuringo (South)
Most physically demanding sector with steep terrain. Rewards you with dramatic views and fewer crowds.
- Gorilla families: Nkuringo, Bushaho, Christmas
- Trek difficulty: Challenging to very challenging
- Best for: Fit trekkers, photographers (great light)
- Note: Some treks descend 600m+ into valleys

Getting There
From Kampala: 8-10 hours by road, depending on sector
By air: Charter flights to Kihihi (Buhoma) or Kisoro (southern sectors)
