Choosing the right sector for your gorilla trek
Bwindi is divided into four trekking sectors, each with its own gorilla families, terrain, and character. Your sector choice affects your experience significantly — here's how to decide.
Key fact: Bwindi is home to roughly half the world's mountain gorillas — about 459 individuals across 20+ habituated families.
The original trekking sector and most developed. Best infrastructure, easiest access, and generally moderate treks.
The largest sector with the most gorilla families. More permit availability but longer drives from Kampala.
Highest altitude sector with bamboo forests. Cooler temperatures and unique birding opportunities.
Most physically demanding sector with steep terrain. Rewards you with dramatic views and fewer crowds.
| Priority | Best Sector |
|---|---|
| Easiest trek | Buhoma |
| Permit availability | Rushaga |
| Fewest tourists | Ruhija or Nkuringo |
| Best lodges | Buhoma |
| Birding + gorillas | Ruhija |
| Dramatic scenery | Nkuringo |
From Kampala: 8-10 hours by road, depending on sector
By air: Charter flights to Kihihi (Buhoma) or Kisoro (southern sectors)
Combine with: Queen Elizabeth NP (en route), Lake Bunyonyi, Mgahinga (golden monkeys)
